The Profession of Dental Hygiene
Dental Hygiene, one of the largest regulated health care professions, has been recognized and practiced as a profession for over fifty years. The College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) is the regulating body for dental hygienists in Ontario. CDHO is responsible for implementing and monitoring that standards of care provided by its members are acceptable and current.
A dental hygienist is a licensed primary health care professional who provides preventive, educational and therapeutic services and promotes total health through the maintenance of optimal oral health.
Employment Opportunities
As members of a dental team, graduates are prepared to help clients achieve and maintain optimal oral health. The majority of dental hygienists provide care in dental offices. However, employment opportunities are also available in hospitals, health institutions, dental and dental hygiene schools, armed forces, community health departments, government agencies, research facilities, administration, program development, consulting and dental sales.
In addition, due to the proclamation of Bill 171 in September of 2007, dental hygienists are now able to provide their services, subject to the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) regulations, standards and guidelines, without an order from a dentist. Opportunities then, could be explored in the area of private dental hygiene clinics.
